dragging a dead deer into nyc
February 11th, 2009 at 9:56Grouper (Liz Harris) hails from Portland, Oregon and release a really killer LP, Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill, and a wonderful split 7″ with City Center in 2008. Both of these releases are beautiful, and deserve your attention (they sure got mine…see my best of lists: LPs & singles). Mary Pearson, of High Places, I think put it put it best:
If I were better at controlling my dreams, I would make them sound like this album.

UPDATE: It looks like a dead deer was actually dragged into NYC to promote the show at the New Museum.
UPDATE II: I’m sorry if my original update implied that the Liz Harris/someone related to Grouper was responsible for the prank (I’ll be more careful with my wording next time). Liz Harris clears this up below. Thanks Liz.

I would never ever condone or participate in anything related to dragging a dead animal carcass anywhere to promote a show. I am 90% vegan and not a fan of animal desecration in any way shape or form. In fact the album name is from a traumatic childhood experience where I was talked in to moving the carcass of a dead deer and it has haunted me for the rest of my life. It was three art pranksters who I do not know in any way and they almost cost me the show because others assumed the same thing you have assumed. I have rarely promoted shows anyway, and I LIVE IN PORTLAND, ACROSS THE COUNTRY. NOT IN NEW YORK. THANKS.
