This past Sunday our friend, Katie, was nice enough to bring us some of the most wonderful food in Upper Manhattan, if not the world….Uptown Juice Bar (UJB)!
This is one thing the Greenpoint/Williamsburg doesn’t have, and that is vegan soul food. While Mighty Diamond satisfied my craving for this… it still fell short compared to UJB (as most things do). Living uptown has some really great things about it, but by far the best is UJB. I miss this place being on my way home.
On this occasion we had mac n’ cheese, collard greens, bbq chicken wings (wooden sticks instead of bones), and a beef and veggie stir fry…keep in mind all vegan! I can say that I have only had good experience, and am proud to say that I have tried quite a bit of the menu at this point… and you can’t go wrong.
I’ll outline the experience in case you want to check it out…you need to know what you are doing. The restaurant is really long and narrow with a counter on one side, a line of people on the other. There is a seating area in the back. The line of people starts back near the seating area, and moves toward the front door. When you get in line there is a huge glass windows with many warmers with delicious food on them. A woman behind the counter will ask you what you want. I typically get a large plate (enough for both klk and I), and with this you get to pick four items (curry chicken Wings, chickpeas, various potato dishes, noodles and beef or chicken, zucchini, the things I mentioned above, lots of other various veggies, random fake meat dishes too, the list goes on).
Now that I am in Harlem much less I am typically inclined to order enough food for two (or three) meals. It travels well, and is just as good reheated.
Don’t forget to grab some of the hot sauce that they have on the counter (and if your getting it to go ask for a container)…you don’t need too much of this stuff (it’s super hot), but has a flavor unlike any other hot sauce I have ever tasted.
The also have some sandwiches, meat pies, juices, cakes, breads, ect. I recommend trying anying…it’s bound to be good. The Oreo Chocolate Cake is one of my favorite deserts, and their meat rolls are really great too.
It was a wonderful surprise to get this on a Sunday, and not even have to leave Brooklyn (thanks Katie!), but it is totally worth the trip to Harlem…whether you are vegetarian or not. Some of the best food I have ever had.Uptown Juice Bar is located in Harlem at 54 W 125th St. (between Lenox Ave and 5th Ave) (212) 987-2660 check out their menu at menupages

P.S. I apologize in advance for not posting quite as much as I usually do this week. It is a crazy week at work with very little time for lunch/blog breaks…and since it is stressful at work that means I’m probably drinking after work, and I don’t like to drunk blog. I’ll do my best, and thanks for reading.
