young governor (this week in mail order)
April 2nd, 2009 at 10:25Young Governor just released the “Virgina Creeper” 7″ on Plastic Idol Records (750 copies on lavender colored vinyl).
I was unfamiliar with this band until Tay at Somebody Come And Play clued me in.
Young Governor is one of the many faces of Ben Cook (his other faces are Fucked Up, Marvelous Darlings, No Warning, and Violent Minds). Young Governor aren’t nearly as hard as some of Cook’s other projects, but totally rock. Upbeat indie rock with a punk feel (think Wire meets pop punk meets jangly indie rock) …this one caught me off guard, and once I heard it I knew I had to have it. Here is what Plastic Idol has to say about it:
Although more pop-infused than the hardcore stylings of Ben’s present/past, Young Governor solo is arguably as raw and unpredictable as anything he’s done, if not more so. The needle-pegged, hyperactive pop of “Virginia Creeper” and “I’m a Mess” offer a glimpse of the Governor’s 2009 agenda, and frankly, teasers don’t get any better than this.
This 7″ is the only release that Young Governor has out, but he/they will have a debut LP coming out on Parts Unknown Records, and another 7″ on Static Shock Records in the near future.
Plastic Idol Records is nice enough to give a sample of this two song 7″

Now that you have heard it, Buy it here…I did yesterday. Listen to more Young Governor on their myspace.
Ben Cook also has a another new band called The Bitters that will have a 12″ coming out on the wonderful Captured Tracks label titled Wooden Glove.
