there's no sky…oh my my (this week in mail order)

Yep, that’s right….three times this week where I’m bringing you hot records that might not exist next week (well they will exist…they just might not be easily obtainable).

This time it’s Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s Jail.  I don’t really know how I came across this band…I was skimming the internet and saw the cover of their Pardono 7″, and read a brief description…then the next thing I know two of their 7″s, including that aforementioned one, are sitting behind the counter at Academy.

This was right as Winter broke (besides the freak snow this week), and the upbeat psychedelic garage rock from Jail was just what I was in the mood for.

The next week I found myself at Academy again trying to snag a copy of the Golden Triangle LP on Mexican Summer (and I had sucess), but I also stumbled upon Jail’s first full length record called There’s No Sky (Oh My My).

While all three of these releases by the band are good, I have to say that There’s No Sky is the one to get.  “Perdono” is the single (hence the 7″), but if you can snag the LP both “Perdono” and the B-side “Always Wrong” are both on the record.  For the record collector this is a little annoying, but I’ll forgive them because the songs are both really great.

I don’t know how many copies of this record were made, but it was done punk rock style. Black vinyl with a white label in the middle.  The sleeve is white with the album art and song information pasted to it.  There is no record label listed, and the item number is (DCOR0000)…so it was either released by Decorated Records (the people responsible for their 7″s), or self released.

I’m a sucker for great packaging, but I do have a soft spot for the DIY punk rock aesthetic.  I’m sure there can’t be that many of these out there, and as far as I know it is a vinyl only release.

mp3′s of this band aren’t easy to come by, but I was able to grab a couple off of a Milwaukee radio station’s blog:

[mp3] Jail- “New Noise” ( an alternate version of “We’ve Won” from There’s No Sky)

[mp3] Jail- “No Mindless Love” (also from There’s No Sky) (both mp3′s via the 88Nine blog)

The video is just some footage to put the song on youtube, but if you want to hear an alternate version of “Pardono” (good, but not as good as the one on the album) you can listen to it here.

You can also stream several mp3′s off of their myspace.

Buy Jail’s There’s No Sky (Oh My My) on LP Here.

There’s a pretty good chance that you can snag one at the Academy Annex in Brooklyn…the staff told me that someone dropped them off.  So I guess the band has friends in Brooklyn.
