no pocky for daykitty (going to…xx merge)

This is the first of a series that I am calling Going To…, this series is inspired by klk and I preparing for a vacation down South…it will involve a stop in our hometown of Charleston, SC, hopefully a road trip to the Georgia Guidestones, and finally ending up with almost a week long stay in Chapel Hill/Carrboro for XX Merge.

We subscribed to the Merge Score Box Set at the end of 2008, and since have been receiving mix CDs, a book, the Merge Score Covers comp, and lots more to come.  On volume six, a mix CD made by Alex Ross the music critic for the New Yorker, there was a extremely sweet Lou Barlow song titled “The Ballad of Daykitty.” I’ve been listening to this track over and over, and am pretty much in love with it.

I wasn’t able to find an mp3, but I did find this charming video shot on Super 8 film that was done by a fan for the song.  The lyrics are what make it so special, and any person who owns a kitty should enjoy it (our Audrey Horne is pictured below).  The video was shot by Laminated Animations.

“The Ballad of Daykitty” appeared on Lou Barlow’s Emoh album released in 2005.  Buy it from Merge here. They are offering free shipping on all US orders.

If you know me… I am a long time Mountain Goats fan, and this series takes its name from the long running series of Mountain Goats songs that start with “Going To.”  XX Merge will be the first in my Going To series, but I hope to have more in the future (it all depends on where I’m going).  I’m hoping to post something Merge Records related most days up until the festival…which starts on July 22nd.  I can’t wait.
