evaporation

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Tonight is a big day for music here in Brooklyn, and even though I haven’t had great internet access over the past couple weeks I still need to let you know what is going on!

Death By Audio has a killer show happening with two of my favorite up and coming acts.  First is Swimsuit, a new band that features the one and only Fred Thomas and friends, making sweet surf pop.  Their debut cassette was pressed in an edition of 100 copies and sold out within a month!  This tape featured this blissful track called evaporation where one of the ladies in the band added some vocals to what has been so far just excellent instrumental surf rock:

  • buy their new tape here.

Opening this show will be Philly’s own Pet Milk playing their fourth live show ever, and their first in NYC!  Pet Milk’s demo has been on at least a couple times a week since I first heard it, and “Cherry Outline” is probably one of my favorite songs of the year.  These guys are quenching my thirst for twee in the best possible way.  I can’t wait to see them in the flesh I’m sure it will be stupendous!

Although these were previously posted here they are again:

[mp3] Pet Milk- “Always Knew It Couldn’t Stay”

People Get Ready and Bad Indians are also playing too.

SWIMSUIT is also playing at Pizza Forest in Brooklyn tomorrow Saturday July 31st.

Right around the corner from Death By Audio is Glasslands where New Jersey’s finest will be there in the flesh.  Not only will Mathew Mondanile, better known as DUCKTAILS, be there, but another one of my favorites…the one and only Julian Lynch!  Along side these two headliners will be Bathetic/ Mexican Summer veterans’ Campfires, another one of my personal favorites Big Troubles, and the up and coming Brooklyn group La Big Vic….all of which is being presented by  Microphone Memory Emotion!

[mp3] Julian Lynch- “Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper Cover)

[mp3] Ducktails- “Mirror Image”

  • buy the mirror image 7″ here.

No matter which side of South 2nd and Kent Ave you end up on you are in for a treat, and if you get there early you can probably jump back and forth between both shows (if you pay for both!).  I’ll see you there.  Cheers,

I normally don’t write about two shows happening on the same night, but I love so many of these bands I had too…both shows will be amazing.  The heat broke so both of these venues should be pretty comfortable tonight.  No more 90 degree heat!

northside fest 2010

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

http://www.thelmagazine.com/blogs/NorthsideFestivalNews/

L Magazine’s Northside Fest starts today in Williamsburg and Greenpoint Brooklyn.  There are tons of bands, art, and movies to be seen.   The schedule can be overwhelming, and while this isn’t a definitive list  I’ve made a guide to the festival of all of the music I would like to see if I could be in many places at once (when I see that means bands that have caught my eye or ear…not necessarily a full endorsement, but things I want to check out).  Here it is as a google calendar…I hope it helps you, because it sure will help me.

View this calendar in your Google Calendar here.

As always, check set times…they change. These set times are as of 6/25 at 8:30am.

Please note that the Saturday and Sunday days shows do interfere with the World Cup (which I have included on the Calendar).

If by chance I left your band, your favorite band, or your friends favorite band off the calendar feel free to leave a comment and let us know about them…would be happy to check it out…and maybe add it to the list.

Cheers and happy northside.

blackburn recordings present:

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Tomorrow, Friday May 7th,  Blackburn Recordings will host a night at Cake Shop as part of the beloved New York City’s music venue’s fifth anniversary.  This party will also kick off the budding relationship between Blackburn Recordings and Connecticut’s masters of hazy psychedelica Sore Eros.

This show will be the 7″ Release party for the new Sore Ero’s record on Blackburn Recordings! I was a big fan of Sore Eros’ amazing full length from last year, Second Chants,  and the teaser video for the Taal Compass 7″ evokes the same emotions as the full length, and makes me very excited to hold a copy of this new piece of vinyl in my hands.  Here is a sample of the B side of the 7″ that will be released tomorrow which features Gary War on synths:

Blackburn was nice enough to send over the a-side from this new single for download.  ”Taal Compass,” the title track of the 7″, shares some of the same qualities as Sore Ero’s other works, but brings more of a olde timey folk side to the forefront.  A perfect song for a breezy cool morning like today:

[mp3] Sore Eros- “Taal Compass”

  • Buy the Taal Compass 7″, eventually, here.

On top of Sore Eros playing Alex Bleeker and his Freaks will be headlining the show, and they also have a new 7″ out on Group Tightener Records!  This record is the perfect follow up to his Underwater Peoples debut LP, and keeps with the same folky classic rock vibe that made us all fall in love with Bleeker in the first place.  ”Getting By” was premiered by Chocolate Bobka a while back, and could very well be the anthem of your summer, and the b-side “Never Going Back” can be a story that is very telling for many of us in our late 20′s…I know for me it rings home particularly hard over the past couple weeks.

  • Buy it from Group Tightener here.

I can’t talk about this show and not mention one of my favorite newer bands that are opening up this show as well. Big Troubles have been tearing up my stereo for some time now, and the new 7″ (which I wrote about here) is just wonderful.  I feel like every person I play this band for ends up tracking down a 7″ or at least looking for more songs to download…they just get in your head and stay there.  These guys are indie rock at it’s finest, and if you haven’t heard them yet I would take this chance to download a couple tracks.  First up is what started the magic for me:

[mp3] Big Troubles- “Freudian Slips”

  • Buy the Freudian Slips 7″ from Black Burn Recordings here
    • read more about his track here

and from the new 7″ on OESB:

[mp3] Big Troubles- “Drastic and Difficult”

  • Buy that from OESB, eventually, here .
    • read more about this track here.

Also take note: BIG TROUBLES will PERFORM LIVE on WFMU‘s TALK’s CHEAP with JASON SIGAL this coming Tuesday May 11th between 9am and noon.  Tune and and listen, or check the archives!

(please note I’ve posted these before, follow the links to reviews of the songs)
