blackburn recordings present:

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Tomorrow, Friday May 7th,  Blackburn Recordings will host a night at Cake Shop as part of the beloved New York City’s music venue’s fifth anniversary.  This party will also kick off the budding relationship between Blackburn Recordings and Connecticut’s masters of hazy psychedelica Sore Eros.

This show will be the 7″ Release party for the new Sore Ero’s record on Blackburn Recordings! I was a big fan of Sore Eros’ amazing full length from last year, Second Chants,  and the teaser video for the Taal Compass 7″ evokes the same emotions as the full length, and makes me very excited to hold a copy of this new piece of vinyl in my hands.  Here is a sample of the B side of the 7″ that will be released tomorrow which features Gary War on synths:

Blackburn was nice enough to send over the a-side from this new single for download.  ”Taal Compass,” the title track of the 7″, shares some of the same qualities as Sore Ero’s other works, but brings more of a olde timey folk side to the forefront.  A perfect song for a breezy cool morning like today:

  • Buy the Taal Compass 7″, eventually, here.

On top of Sore Eros playing Alex Bleeker and his Freaks will be headlining the show, and they also have a new 7″ out on Group Tightener Records!  This record is the perfect follow up to his Underwater Peoples debut LP, and keeps with the same folky classic rock vibe that made us all fall in love with Bleeker in the first place.  ”Getting By” was premiered by Chocolate Bobka a while back, and could very well be the anthem of your summer, and the b-side “Never Going Back” can be a story that is very telling for many of us in our late 20′s…I know for me it rings home particularly hard over the past couple weeks.

  • Buy it from Group Tightener here.

I can’t talk about this show and not mention one of my favorite newer bands that are opening up this show as well. Big Troubles have been tearing up my stereo for some time now, and the new 7″ (which I wrote about here) is just wonderful.  I feel like every person I play this band for ends up tracking down a 7″ or at least looking for more songs to download…they just get in your head and stay there.  These guys are indie rock at it’s finest, and if you haven’t heard them yet I would take this chance to download a couple tracks.  First up is what started the magic for me:

[mp3] Big Troubles- “Freudian Slips”

  • Buy the Freudian Slips 7″ from Black Burn Recordings here
    • read more about his track here

and from the new 7″ on OESB:

[mp3] Big Troubles- “Drastic and Difficult”

  • Buy that from OESB, eventually, here .
    • read more about this track here.

Also take note: BIG TROUBLES will PERFORM LIVE on WFMU‘s TALK’s CHEAP with JASON SIGAL this coming Tuesday May 11th between 9am and noon.  Tune and and listen, or check the archives!

(please note I’ve posted these before, follow the links to reviews of the songs)

lame drivers (and free beer…tonight!)

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Lame Drivers are playing tonight at Trash Bar.  They go on at 8pm, and there is a $6 cover…but that includes an open bar from 8-9pm!  So you pay six bucks, get to see a great band, and drink as much as you can during the hour that they are playing….pretty good deal for Monday after Independence Day.

I’ve been a fan of Lame Drivers for quite a while…they feature members of Get Him Eat Him, and the Great Excape (among others).  And I am continually impressed every time I see them live, and pretty excited about tonight.  It is kind of a sad occasion because this is the last time that the Lame Drivers will be playing as a four piece for quite a while.  Jason Sigal (guitar and vocals), Joe Posner (bass), and Matt LeMay (drums) will be saying goodbye to guitarist Kevin Sparks.  Kevin you will be missed.

Lame Drivers have made quite a few songs available on LCMR Records site.  I’ve been rocking these:

[mp3] Lame Drivers- “Change Your Mind”

[mp3] Lame Drivers- “Get Distracted

If you like them, download the whole ep, Let Them Eat Tape, for free here. Thanks LCMR Records!

Full Details about the show tonight…oh, how I love going to see the opening band:

midnite till death (lame drivers pictures & new mp3!)

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Midnite Till Death No. 23 was this past Friday at Cake Shop.  The highlights of the night were the Lame Drivers and So Cow.  Lame Drivers formed in Providence, RI and are now based in NYC/NJ, and draw influence from Husker Du, Guided By Voices, and Pavement (among many others).  They opened up the night and played a set almost entirely of new material.  This band just seems to get better and better each time I see them.  Lame Drivers were nice enough to send over one of their new tracks, “Demondz Blood,” for download off of the Great Pumpkin!  Grab it below.
