this land (liam the younger at the underwater peoples showcase)

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Saturday marked the first, and hopefully not the last, Underwater Peoples Records Showcase.  I was happy to be able to make it for the early part.  I was able to meet Ari and Sawyer of UP, and they were both as super nice in person as they are over the internet!  McG was there to keep me company too.

When entering a massive event at Market Hotel you have to have a plan…and mine was to catch Liam the Younger, and that is what I did.

I was able to get a couple videos of Liam playing solo before his band took the stage with him too.

[these videos were taken down upon request.  sorry to those trying to view.]

If you are interested in downloading the albums (for Free!) that these songs are on you can find links to After the Graveyard (where “This Land pt. 1″ appears), and Clear Skies Over Black River (where “Cooking” appears) on my post from last week.  Free downloads of both of these albums are provided by Brave Men Run records.

Although I didn’t get to see them at the showcase I’m looking forward to seeing Family Portrait and Beach Fossils play with Holiday Shores and Sore Eros this weekend!

  • Liam the Younger here.
  • gprecs videos here.

End note: my tripods should be coming in the mail today!  that means videos from now on should be much more sturdy…or at least when I feel like carrying the tripods…more on those to come later.

younger or older

If you follow my twitter, you probably read yesterday that I’m feeling slightly uninspired by music this week…which is bad for someone who writes mainly about music.  So I’ve reverted back into my starred items on the old google reader, and came across a post from fellow greenpointer McG.

Liam the Younger is one of the many musicians coming out of New Jersey these days, but specifically from Glen Rock.  Liam the Younger was first brought to my attention when he appeared on the Underwater Peoples Compilation earlier this year (buy the comp here!).  While Underwater Peeps usually get a rap for being the beachy, or surfy counter part of some of the NYC underground labels this isn’t totally true…Liam the Younger fully embarrasses the land rather than the inspiration of the Jersey coast.

To my surprise, and something that McG pointed out a couple weeks ago, is that Liam the Younger has two albums that were released as CD-Rs on Brave Men Run (an amazing name for a record label by the way) that have since gone out of print, but are now available for free download!  This might be exactly what I needed to pull me out of my music funk.  Both of these lean toward the folk side of the music spectrum (fans of Woodie Guthrie, Billy Bragg, Bonnie Prince Billy, and The Mountain Goats all might want to check in), and I have a funny feeling they will be on repeat in my headphones for quite a while.

[album download] Liam the Younger- After the Grave (2007)
“Passed through a graveyard. Fifteen songs about my mind and my surroundings.”

“Written alone. Recorded alone. ‘Slumber punk’”

If you weren’t already aware…Liam the Younger is playing the Underwater Peoples Late Summer Showcase this Saturday, August 22nd at Market Hotel in Brooklyn.  Liam the Younger plays at roughly 7pm. For more details on this showcase click here.  He will also be playing in Boston, MA at the Butcher Shop with Jana Hunter on September 5th.  I’m on the look out for new material by Liam, and I’ll be sure to let you know when I find it.
