Highspeed Drift” is the first track off of Gary War’s Horribles Parade.

This video was made by Jacqueline Castel (of WNYU’s wonderful (Make) the Product radio show).  I was completely unaware that she did music videos until this popped up on No Conclusion.  I’m pretty into the video, and I think it complements  the song (and Horribles Parade in general) wonderfully.  It really gives me the underwater vibe that I get when listening to the album.   Gary War hasn’t steered me wrong yet.  I still need to pick up Galactic Citizen….maybe this weekend.

On another note if you haven’t heard Gary War’s first album New Raytheonport…you should really check it out…and you can do that for free!  New Raytheonport was one of my favorite albums of 2008 that I didn’t actually hear in 2008, and shows a little bit of a lighter side of Gary War and psychedelica.  This free download is possible because of Gary War and the Free Music Archive at WFMU!

Now that it is available for free there is no reason for you not to have this album…and it’s perfect for this last weekend of summer.

Check it out:

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

horribles parade (this week in mail order)

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Horribles Parade is the new full length from Gary War. This is the second album and the followup to last years’ New Raethesport LP on SHDWPLY Records. The album expands on the more stripped down sound of his Sacred Bones “Zontag” single, plying layers of warm fuzz and feedback on top of psychedelic pop song structures. The CD contains “Anhedonic Man,” previosly released as a one-sided single on Hell Yes! records, as well as the whole Galactic Citizens 12″ EP, soon to be relased on Captured Tracks.

Special edition comes with screen printed outer sleeve, alternate cover art, insert and download card. An edition of 150. (via Sacred Bones)

Sacred Bones is back again with another beautiful looking release, and it is no secret that I have been digging on Gary War since I discovered New Raytheonport. If I had heard New Raytheonport in 2008 it would have made my top 10.

Gary War’s psych pop is impressive both on recording and live, and I’m really happy to see another full length coming out, and much sooner than I expected…next week.

Since there are only 150 copies of the Limited Edition LP I’m going to make this quick:

Buy Gary War’s Horribles Parade from Sacred Bones here.

You shouldn’t need it, and if you do the limited edition will probably already be gone…for more convincing check this out:

Gary War also posted a new mp3 to his blog that is currently unreleased:

Gary War is a name that has been floating around my internetting since the begining of 2009, but I didn’t have the pleasure to hear him(them?) until WFMU’s Talk’s Cheap with Jason Sigal had them play live on his show a couple weeks ago (well I think it was pre-recorded, but it was still awesome…listen to it here).

I picked the full legnth this past week end: New Raytheonport (out on Shdwply Records and limited to 500 copies).

On first listen my initial comparison was a low-fi version of Ween  But don’t take this the wrong way, I know Ween can sound like anything, but some of their slightly groovey psychadelic stuff.  But now after listening to it much more closely I realize that this is a passing comparison…I guess it still sticks at times, on a song or two, but there is much more to Gary War.

Gary War is creating psycadelic sound scapes in his own vein of synth-psych.  The album is not over abrasive as some of the more noise pysch acts are these days, but more of a relaxed but at times still has that fuzzy vibe (see track three “Obscure Preferences”).  Influence is coming from all over on these guys from your classic psych, garage, shoegaze, ambient, and even some dub (specifically on “Please Don’t Die”).  The album is really unique and beautifully put together (both the art and the music).  If you can find get it.

I have been rocking this during the day last weekend, and on the train this week, and haven’t even had a chance to listen to it under the influence… for that reason I’m really looking forward to Saturday!  This record has quickly worked it’s way into regular rotation on my ipod and record player.  I hope you enjoy these tracks as much as I do.

Gary War mp3s:

Gary War- “Please Don’t Die”

Gary War- “Good Clues”

both tracks are off of the New Raytheonport LP.

I really don’t where to tell you to buy this record (I wish I did). There is a paypal link on the Gary War Blogspot, but the SHDWPLY Records website tells you not to use paypal, and to order the record by emailing (gregarywar@gmail.com). If anyone knows the best way to get it please let me know. Please note that the album was available for download off of the blogspot, but the link no longer works. My copy was purchased at Academy in Brooklyn.
