so cow
Hey, Ya’ll I’m on vacation!

But that isn’t going to stop me from letting you know that one of my favorite bands is playing two shows in New York City this weekend!

Ireland’s best…SO COW is back in the US, and their final stop is here in NYC!

It just so happens they are playing my favorite out door music series…and it can’t get any better because they are playing with THE OH SEES!

If you are unfamiliar with these Irishmen you should take a listen.  They make some of the catchiest guitar pop out there right now, and have been my favorite band for about the past two years.  Today I’ll share with you one of the first tracks that I heard by these popsmiths.  It’s a cover of Television Personalities “This Angry Silence”:

and one of my favorites of the self titled:

Next week I hope to catch up on lots of video posting.  I’ve had some gems building up on my vimeo and it’s time to unload them on you nice people…I also hope to finally get my wrap up of Northside Fest posted too…we will see this is vacation.

Until the next post….cheers.

so cow

My favorite Irishmen are returning to New York before their ultimate return to Ireland, and beyond.  So Cow have zigzagged the country playing in pretty much every state, and Canada…but are looping back around to the North East.

If you haven’t picked up your copy of Meaningless Friendly yet…I’m not to sure what you are waiting for (Buy it here).  Already a twenty ten classic in my book…and it only gets better and better with each listen.  So far my favorite track is “Mokpo” (I wish so bad that they were playing this live on this tour).

so cow

There was not a more romantic way to spend Valentines Day than seeing So Cow, and rocking out with my lady rocking out.  It was a pretty chill show where Brian, Jonny, and Gareth played a super tight set.  I was able to capture a handful of of those songs to video, and So Cow also got klk‘s and mine White Lodge treatment (see above and below, and more to come once more film gets developed). Gareth has now headed back across the big lake, but So Cow picked up another drummer mid way through tour, and even showed up on Wired.com (my go to for tech news) in a picture from SXSW!

Just the other day a new non-album So Cow track popped up on Ireland’s own Pop Goes the Radio. Much in the vein of “Girl Racer” this new track brings to mind that the recorded work of So Cow is primarily the work of Brian Kelly…”(I Wanna Go To the) Sugar Factory” is a pop jem that I’m sure will see the light of day eventually on vinyl, but in the mean time I’m happy to hear in in mp3 form.  I just love his use of the drum machine…it just feels so at home, but even when these songs are recreated live they are brought into a new light by the live drummer.  Way to go Brian, and thanks to Josh for posting it.  Maybe they will visit Domino while they are in Williamsburg?

[mp3] So Cow- “(I Wanna Go To the) Sugar Factory”

Also if you haven’t already snagged the wonderful EP of cover songs that So Cow put up at the beginning of the year on his website/myspace here is another cover from it.  This time it is Ireland’s Local Living Guy‘s “Laundry Service.”  Makes me think that I should listen to the original.  I’m sure we all know how this line feels…oh so familiar…”When the parties done I’ll do my laundry and listen to records.”

meaningless friendly (this week in mail order)

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Just when I thought I had all the So Cow news posted yesterday, Josh from Ireland’s own Pop Goes the Radio commented on my post.

Pop Goes the Radio posted three tracks from upcoming album on Meaningless Friendly due out very soon on Tic Tac Totally.  Here is what Tic Tac Totally has to say about the new album:

So Cow “Meaningless Friendly” LP/CD is just 2 weeks away folks! The album will be released mid-tour (see below for dates!) just in time for SXSW. The new record expands brilliantly on the promise/premise of the “S/T” LP from last year, which featured 18 of his best collected tracks. Here offering 13 fresh ones of the great off-kilter TVP’s-meets-Home Blitz-pop wandering So Cow delivers. In the meantime we have a digital album release set up for 2/16/10 on iTunes, so no worries if you’re fiending either!

Extra Friendly” LP+7″ edition
Check back REAL soon for this! This package gets you the new LP, plus a limited edition 7″ EP with 3 bonus tracks.Exclusively through TTT and ltd. to 300 copies. Look out!

Keep your eyes on Tic Tac Totally’s Website…I know I will.  I need to get a copy of that limited edition 7″.  This is the most exciting music news, at least for me, in 2010 so far!

In the mean time check out these tracks.

“Girl Racer” reminds us that So Cow at it’s core is one man, Brian Kelly. Using not much more than minimal electronics, and electric guitar Kelly crafts a near perfect pop track .  This track really resonates in the part of my brain that loved “Shackleton.”  Even though this track has perfect pop sensibility that doesn’t prevent Kelly from adding some psychedelic guitar to the background.  Apparently if you are from Tuam, or Ireland in general, there are references in this song that us Americans just don’t get, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that it is an awesome introduction to So Cow’s new album.  A version of this track originally appeared on a compilation CD about Tuam which Pop Goes the Radio might be posting in the future.

[mp3] So Cow- “Girl Racer”

“Random Girls” is a track that I’m sure many of us boys can relate to…so many ladies in this world, and so many crushes (I’m lucky to already have my special lady).  This track shows a little more of what North America is in store for on So Cow’s tour.  This track features a full band, and an intense guitar solo toward the end.   Kelly’s musicianship is what made me fall in love with So Cow in the first place, and this track is a perfect example of that.  There are sure to be plenty of ladies crushing on these Irish boys as they make their way through the states and Canada.

[mp3] So Cow- “Random girls”

If “Girl Racer” and “Random Girls” are any indication of the rest of the album we are sure in for a treat.  I’ll let you head over to Pop Goes the Radio for the third track called “Dunno.” This final track is one I remember from So Cow’s last American tour. Check it out here.

Meaningless Friendly is now on sale from Tic Tac Totally.  Buy it  here .

best albums of 2009

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Last year I did a list of twenty five albums, and I began to think that the rank ordering no longer meant anything once I hit a certain number. This year I thought I was going to do a top ten with a not so short list of other albums, but then I decided that would be the same thing as a top twenty five.

I feel like I settled in the middle. I was able to narrow 2009 down to fifteen albums, and no short list. These are my favorites.  If you haven’t heard them check out the mp3, and if you like it buy the album…you won’t be disappointed. Cheers.

———————————————–

The Great Pumpkin’s favorite albums of 2009.

15.) Screaming Females- Power Move

Hearing this record for the first time was like the first time I heard Dinosaur Jr.  Power Move was released by Don Geovanni Records.

[mp3] Screaming Females- “Bell”

14.) Desolation Wilderness- New Universe

When I saw the cover and title of this album I hoped it would sound like it looked.   And it did.  A shoegaze master piece released by K Records.

[mp3] Desolation Wilderness- “Boardwalk Theme”

13.) Alex Bleeker and the Freaks- Alex Bleeker and the Freaks

Classic Rock for my generation. This record gets more powerful with each listen. Released via the wonderful Underwater Peoples Records. Their cover of “Animal Tracks” is just as good as the original.

[mp3] Alex Bleeker & The Freaks- “Animal Tracks (Mountain Man cover)”

12.) Sonny and The Sunsets- Tomorrow is Alright

Sonny and the Sunsets made the perfect warm weather pop album that it transcends seasons. I find that even on a morning as cold as today Tomorrow is Alright can make me feel warm inside. Sonny is part of the Endless Nest Collective, and if you know what is good for you should have your eye on the nest…so many great records came out of this group in 2009. Tomorrow is Alright was released by Soft Abuse Records.

[mp3] Sonny and the Sunsets- “Too Young To Burn”

11.) Nite Jewel- Good Evening

This is an album of psychedelic dance jams  and not necessarily the dance music you would hear in a club, but more what you want to chill out with at the end of the night.  This record was released by Human Ear Music / Gloriette Records

[mp3] Nite Jewel- “Weak for Me”

10.) BOAT- Setting the Paces

If there has been one album this year that can bring me out of dark times it is Setting the Paces.   Released by Magic Marker Records.

[mp3] BOAT- “Prince Of Tacoma”

9.) Julie Doiron- I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day

While she is known for her sad songs this album shows her lighter side, and that is something that I really enjoy…and she can totally wail on that guitar too.  Released by  Jagjaguwar Records.

[mp3] Julie Doiron- “Spill Yer Lungs”

8.) Ducktails- Ducktails// Landscapes

As far as I’m concerned these two should have been a double album.  I have a hard time thinking about them separately. Ducktails in a sense gave birth to Real Estate, and possibly this whole thing chillwave thing.  Ducktails came out via Not Not Fun and Lanscapes via Olde English Spelling Bee.

[mp3] Ducktails- “Landrunners” (off of Landscapes)

  • buy Ducktails here // buy Landscapes here.
  • more on Ducktails can be found here.

7.) Karl Blau- Zebra

This man is a constant inspiration to me.  This record is just one of three albums that he made this year that I fell in love with. Released by K Records.

[mp3] Karl Blau- “Dark Sedan”

6.) Pains of Being Pure at Heart- Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Like a time machine to the late eighties //early nineties.  Another great album from Slumberland.

[mp3] Pains of Being Pure at Heart- “Come Saturday”

5.) Ganglians- Monster Head Room

The first full length form this Sacramento band, and it was pretty much perfect.  The LP was released by Weird Forest and CD by Woodsist (who will be repressing the LP).

[mp3] Ganglians- “Crying Smoke”

  • buy it here.
  • more on Ganglians can be found here.

4.) TOM: WFMU’s the Best Show’s Tribute to Paul McCartney’s RAM (various artists)

The Best Show put together the best tribute album ever.  If you are unfamiliar with RAM it is the only album I have ever heard of by Paul McCartney refered to as dirty (and that is a very good thing). Released as a DJ Premium for donating to WFMU… Sad that it was so exclusive.  The moral of this story is…DONATE TO WFMU!

I haven’t really listened to Danielson over the past couple albums, but this cover makes me want to rethink that…one of my favorite tracks from this album, and one of the best covers I have heard in a long time.

Danielson- “Monkberry Moon Delight”

3.) Mount Eerie- Wind’s Poem

I am a long time fan of Phil Elverum, and on this album he took me to a place I never imagined I’d go.  Dark and beautiful…seeing it performed live gave me the best halloween I’ve had in years.

[mp3] Mount Eerie- “Between Two Mysteries”

  • buy it here from P.W. Elverum and Suns.
  • more about Mount Eerie  can be found here.

2.) Julian Lynch- Orange You Glad

After this record I will be on the look out for anything Julian Lynch ever releases.  Orange You Glad has moved me. Released on Olde English Spelling Bee.

[mp3] Julian Lynch- “Rancher”

  • buy it here.
  • more on Julian Lynch (mp3s, video, pictures, reviews, more) can be found here.

1.) So Cow- So Cow

By far the record I listened to most this past year.  The pop catches you, but the guitar and lyrics keep you. I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to Tic Tac Totally Records.  If you didn’t catch So Cow when they were in the states last year their 2010 American Tour starts in less than two week!  Tour dates can be found here.

[mp3] So Cow- “Casablanca”

  • Buy it here.
  • more on So Cow (reviews, posters, mp3s, pictures)can be found here.

Thanks for reading my best of lists.  I’m pretty sure this is the end of it…my goal was to get it up by February 1st, but I ended up one day late…I’m ok with that.

You can find more of mine, and some of my special guests, best of lists here.

wrapping things up (north side fest day four, and final thoughts)

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Day 4 of North Side Fest. June 14th, 2009.

North Side was finally winding down, but there were some interesting things going on…after doing the normal Sunday morning routine, I headed over to Bruar Falls, but first was a stop at Academy that produced Zork’s Tape Bruise (I thought the first press was out of print, but this copy was on clear wax…I guess I win!).  If you get a chance to snag this Oh Sees album you totes should.  It is basically John’s 4 track recordings, and a cd of all of the out of print eps.  I was happy to find it, although the number of Oh Sees records I have is becoming exceedingly large.

I considered buying Enter the Vaselines, but didn’t…and then headed to see the Browns play.

When I got to Bruar Falls I was one of maybe 5 people there for the show…but more people trickled in slowly, and the Browns ended up playing to a decent sized crowd at 3 in the afternoon.  They were tight, and the singer played on the floor.  I caught them at Market Hotel sometime last fall, and I can say they have grown as a band quite a bit since then.  I really enjoyed their set.  They are making 90′s influenced indie rock…you can see bits and pieces of your favorite bands in their music, but at the same time it still feels fresh.  I haven’t picked up their album yet, but I have been digging on these tracks that found in the mp3-o-sphere:

[mp3] The Browns- “For the Saints”
(off of the 1928 Label Sampler. Out of Print)

[mp3] The Browns- “Two Of You”
(off of Family HistoryBuy it here.)

Enter the Vaselines was still sticking around in my head, so I headed up to Permanent Records…and just as expected it was a couple bucks cheaper than the other shops in Williamsburg.  So I snagged a copy of it…and well worth it too.

I met up with klk at Studio B for a totally packed out performance by the Dodos.  I really enjoyed Visitor, and the first two times I saw the Dodos…but this time it wasn’t the same.  Maybe it was that I was in the back of Studio B, but they didn’t have the same effect.  The sound was boomy, and I just couldn’t get into it.  We left after about three songs, and headed to The Diamond…which was a good decision.  I am interested in hearing the new Dodos album when it comes out though.

I didn’t do much else for the rest of the afternoon except listen to my new Vaselines collection (which is totally awesome…thanks Sub Pop!).  I headed over to Shea Stadium a little later than I was planning to, and unfortunately missed The Gutsies, but I did catch most of Knight School‘s set and I was very happy that I did.    Knight school totally rocked.  I’m not going to say much more about them because I’m going to dedicate a post to them soon…but be on the look out.

Next up was So Cow, and as ya’ll probably already know his record on Tic Tac Totally has pretty much been my obsession of 2009.  These guys were in California earlier that morning…traveled all day…showed up to Shea Stadium during Knight School’s set, and played about an hour later.  Even though the three men that make up So Cow were exhausted from traveling they still managed to play for almost a full hour, and killed it.  So Co is just one of those bands that doesn’t have an off night, or that was the impression I got from them seeing them play a hand full of times in NYC over the past two months.  I also caught them again at The Bell House the following night.  I’m a little sad that I won’t get to see them play for a while, but I’m sure they will be back.  Oh and if you didn’t already see, So Cow’s album got a rad review on Pitchfork! At Shea Stadium…someone threw a chicken at So Cow (my first gif!?!):

I forgot to mention (therefore I’m adding this after I originally posted this) that the So Cow show at Shea Stadium was just about the most fun show I have been to in NYC…everyone was dancing (literally), having a good time, and just happy to be there.  I was really glad that I got to be part of it.  The chicken was thrown, but it was in good fun.  A great end to the fest.

Lots of pictures of So Cow can be found here.

North Side Festival Wrap Up:

Overall North Side Fest was pretty cool, and I commend L Magazine for taking on something so ambitious.  It brought lots of great music to the neighborhood, and overall I’m sure it helped out local businesses by bringing large groups of people out at all times of the day.

I think it was a great idea for there to be North Side Fest Badges, but I just feel like it didn’t give the badge holder enough benefits.  And here is why:

  • The Badge didn’t guarantee entry to all of the shows.
    • Only 20% of the venue capacity was reserved for Badge holders, and if you weren’t there in time you didn’t get in.
      • There was also no effective way for the festival to track badge holders coming and going
        • Statements like “No Re-Entry for Badge Holders” were common, and I felt that it just wasn’t a fair way to treat people who had invested money in the whole weekend.
    • This was the main problem.
      • In order to get your moneys worth out of the badge you have to jump from show to show (it’s just not cost effective if you don’t), and not being guaranteed entry is lame.
      • Even if a show wasn’t sold out to the public…if 20% of the capacity was filled by badge holders, no more could get in.  This created problems with buzz bands like Real Estate.
    • Also it was really hard to take advantage of the “free drinks” that were available…you had to try really hard, and in the end I only got two.
      • I would almost like to see more drink specials at venues, rather than free drinks or drink specials at non-venues.

All in all, I think people would be willing to pay more for a badge if it ensured that they got into the shows they wanted to see.

My last questions about the Badges is how do bands get paid?  I know that North Side Fest people are at all the venues to count how many badge holders enter…but how is this money distributed?   I assume money got thrown toward Real Estate from North Side Fest because the badge holder capacity was sold out…but what about smaller shows that don’t attract that many badge holders?  Is any money given to those bands?  It is in the music lovers interest to buy the badge, especially if they are planning on seeing lots of shows…and while I wasn’t a fan of SIN way of dealing with NSF…their flier did raise some questions. I’m not siding with SIN (they knew what they were getting into when they sided with North Side Fest to begin with), but it did make me wonder where the money from the badges went.  One would hope that some of your money from the badge purchase is going to the bands you actually got to see.

These were all thoughts that came up during the festival, and since I have a blog I feel that this is as good a place as any to air these opinions.  I think a little better planning could go into pairing bands with venues of appropriate size (ie Real Estate, The Van Pelt, and the Beets could have all used a larger venue).

These things will all be worked out with time.  I hope to see more national acts at the Festival next year (this year was a little bit heavy on the local, but there is nothing wrong with that…we have a great scene), but overall I congratulate L Magazine, and North Side Festival on a successful first year.   Lots of great bands played, and I felt that it was really good to see all of the venues, bands, promoters, and local media working together to make this happen.  North Side brought people out to Williamsburg and Greenpoint that might not normally venture into North Brooklyn to see bands play and be part of the festivities…we even got calls from friends asking what shows they should go too. because they wanted to check out a North Side event.  Basically what I’m trying to say is: YR doing a great job, and I look forward to it next year.
