between two mysteries

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

There are very few things musically that could make my week better than Karl Blau coming to New York, but this week has topped it.  Phil Elverum and his Mount Eerie will be making two New York appearances this weekend as well!

Mount Eerie released the wonderful Wind’s Poem a couple months back, and if you are a listener or reader of NPR you might have heard about it from them (they know their stuff).  Wind’s Poem is Elverum’s second venture into the realm of black metal, and his vision is breath taking.

Don’t let the words “black metal” or even just the word “metal” scare you away from this album…let me assure you the Phil put’s his own spin on the genre (s), and it is unlike anything I’ve have heard before…metal or otherwise.   Bringing things a little closer to the pacific north west Elverum even incorporates elements of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks into this album, and brings this to the forefront on, another one, of my favorite songs of the year:

Buy Wind’s Poem here!

I’ve now let you in on two of my favorite songs of the year (one yesterday and one today), but I will even go as far to say that Wind’s Poem is right near the top of my best records of 2009 as well.

Appropriately enough Mount Eerie right after this venture into the expanding realm of black metal will be performing on Halloween….with two of New York’s finest black metal acts….Liturgy and Malkuth!

This is not just any show, but a collaboration between Todd P and Pitchfork’s Brandon Stosuy.  This show is part of Stosuy’s  Show No Mercy series:

Halloween!
Saturday October 31st
at Market Hotel

Also appearing at this show will be No Kids and Tara Jane O’Neil.

I have seen Phil Elverum play as Mount Eerie several times before, and it has never been anything less than magical.  I’m extremely excited to see what type of set he decides to perform while playing with not only one, but two well know black metal acts….could there be a collaboration…I can’t wait to find out on Saturday.

If Market Hotel and black metal aren’t your thing you have a second chance to catch Elverum’s magic:

woodsist family creeps

Friday, February 6th, 2009

There is a great set of shows this weekend and they all revolve around the Woodsist records family.  Woodsist Records/Fuck-it Tapes are run by Jeremy Earl of Woods.

If you haven’t seen Woods play I highly recommend it (they are one of my favorite live acts right now), and are playing three times in the NYC area this weekend.

Woods will be accompanied by label mates Blank Dogs, former label mates Wavves (who just signed to Fat Possum), and Nodzzz (of Make a Mess Records).

These should be really rad shows.

silk flowers

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

I first heard about Silk Flowers on the City Center blog, and Fred also posted a remix of one of their songs.  But while I was in Academy the other weekend I picked up their first 7″ (which appears to be self released).  The 7″ was limited to 300 copies, but a second set of 300 has just been printed.

I really didn’t know what to expect when I bought the record because the remix didn’t really have any vocals.  The 7″ is a nice 3 song record…vocals on one, and two instrumentals (all recorded by Fred Thomas of City Center).  Musically it reminded me of New Order meets Kraftwerk fronted by Danzig (but Danzig if you took a 45 and played it on 33rpm)?  But that isn’t really doing it justice at all, and when I read that in type it kind of sounds ridiculous.  The vocals on the record are a little strange at first, but I quickly became intoxicated by them, and have been listening to the record many times over the past two weeks.  Even the instrumentals are bizarre pop, with a bit of an ’80s vibe.

I was excited to learn that Silk Flowers, who I didn’t know were members of Soiled Matress & the Springs,  will be releasing a full length record this year on Post Present Medium! And even more excited to learn that they are playing at the Shank (a new space that Todd P is using in Greenpoint at 98 Bayard Street near the corner of Leonard).

If you happen to see the 7″ I recommend picking it up (if you are in NYC try Academy in Brooklyn, or Other Music).  There is also information on where to order the record on their myspace.
