blood on the sand (this week in mail order)

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Ganglians released one of my favorite albums this year, Monster Head Room (on Weird Forest), and the self titled EP that they did on Woodsist was also pretty awesome (and has grown on me a lot).  Now they are back with two new songs on Captured Tracks.

The 7″ is somewhere between the slightly chaotic weirdo pop of the self titled ep and the wonderful, more classically influenced,  psychadelica of  Monster Head Room.  The A side is titled “Blood on the Sand” and the B side “Make it Up.” I’ve only seen Ganglians once, but have been listening to their albums quite a bit and I can say that these songs sounded familiar on the first listen…almost eerily so.  I feel like I have heard them a hundred times, but in actuality it is really like 10. This single seems like it will also be making my year end lists.

If you haven’t heard Ganglians yet I feel that this 7″ is a good starting point.  Pick it for for $6, and you might find yourself hunting down the other two LPs.

[mp3] Ganglians- “Blood on the Sand” (buy it from CT here, or if you prefer at Insound here)

This one is limited to 1,000 copies, and rumor is they are going fast (it’s also rumored that CT won’t let things go out of print…we will see). As much as I enjoy “Blood on the Sands” I’m really in love with “Make It Up,” but you will have to pick up the record to hear that one.  Highly recommended as are all of their releases.

ducktails tonight! (and woods and dungen…this week in mail order, and more)

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Tonight there are several amazing shows, but I’m really looking forward to seeing Woods and Ducktails play at a place like the Bell House (not to mention Dungen! get tickets here!).  If you happen to have a ticket stub from Animal Collective in Prospect Park the word is you get $5 off admission.

This is one of those shows where I’m hoping to pick up a couple records that I have been meaning to get for quite a while.

Record #1

The Ducktails split 7″ with Julian Lynch that the wonderful Underwater Peoples put out:

I hope most of you reading this are familiar with Underwater Peoples by now…they were the first ones to bring us a record by Real Estate, and this is their second piece of vinyl.  Just as the Real Estate 7″ came with a CD of the tracks…this release also has a bonus, but this time it is a DVD of Richard Law’s portrait art.  Underwater Peeps were nice enough to post two of the tracks from the 7″ in video from (which I assume are coming from the DVD!):

Ducktails- “Parasailing”

YouTube Preview Image

although Julian Lynch isn’t playing tonight…his tracks on this record are rad.

Julian Lynch- “Garden 2″

YouTube Preview Image

Buy this Ducktails/Julian Lynch split 7″/DVD combo from Underwater Peoples here!

On top this wonderful Ducktails’ 7″ Matt Mondanile is on a role with his second LP this year…this one is out on Olde English Spelling Bee!

Record #2

The new Ducktails LP is titled Landscapes.  I haven’t heard the LP, but this song happens to be on it:

Ducktails- “Landrunner”

YouTube Preview Image

I always forget how crazy that video is until I re-watch it, and the song is awesome…so if that is any indication of what to expect we should all be snagging this LP as well.  I really can’t get enough of this surfy psychedelica, and it seems to be what Ducktails does best.  Olde English Spelling Bee seems to do pretty limited releases so this one might not be around too long.

Buy Ducktails’ Landscapes here.

On the topic of limited re-leases Woods has out a 4 song “bootleg” out.

Record #3

This record is titled Acoustic Family Creeps (Play Live In the Woods), which I’ve come to think is a collaboration between Woodsist and Captured Tracks (not sure?).

This record isn’t very common on the internets…but you can get it at Woods shows and Academy Annex in Brooklyn, or try Florida is Dying (or email Captured Tracks or Woodsist?).  It seems to be going for about $12-$15 for the four songs, but people seem to be raving about it (which is expected these days…Woods have been putting out great records one after another).

This last one will be a game time decision for me, but the Ducktails records should be coming back to my house for sure.

Recently Ray Concepcion put together this compilation video of Woods playing at the Whitney.  It’s a pretty rad video, and is making me really excited for the show tonight (thanks to ChocolateBobka for the tip on this one):

Woods- “Rain On”

http://www.vimeo.com/5760130

Ahhh now all I have to do is wait a couple more hours.  Hope to see you there, and if you are make sure to grab some vinyl…records should be plentiful.

If you aren’t going to this show tonight, you should think about hitting up the Underwater Peoples monster Late Summer Showcase at Market Hotel featuring Real Estate, Air Waves, Ducktails, and Beach Fossils, Family Portrait, Pill Wonder, Andrew Cedermark, Dana Jewell, Liam the Younger, Fluffy Lumbers, Alex Bleeker & the Freaks, Frat Dad, Big Troubles, and DJ Etienne.  More to come on this as it gets a little closer…meaning next week.

End Notes:

  • Although I will not be buying these records via mail order they are definitly This Week In Mail Order worthy!
  • More on Ducktails here.
  • More on Woods here.

woods get bitter(s) at woodsist/captured tracks festival

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Captured Tracks released Wooden Glove, the 12″ ep by Ben Cook and Aerin Fogel’s The Bitters, earlier this year.   According to The Bitters’ myspace blog Ben Cook will be in France touring with Fucked Up, but it appears that Aerin Fogel will be at the Festival:

well, here i am in new york.

wow.
anyways, July 3rd/4th is the almighty Woodsist/Captured Tracks festival in brooklyn new york. CT has already fathered some of our record babies, and Woodsist is a soon-to-be-bitter dad. needless to say, we were pencilled on the bill for this fest.
but ben will be in france eating baguettes with brie and taking naps on the riviera for a million dollars an hour, with fucked up, so everyone in new york shed a few tears because we could not play.
but don’t cry, because i’m playing anyways. make sure yr there for Woods’ set, because i’m gonna jump on that and play a few Bitters tracks with them. that’s July 4th at some early-o-clock, like maybe 7? check the todd p website: www.toddpnyc.com it’ll be somewhere in the gut of bushwick at the Broadway Backyard lot.
come check out the festival it’s going to be a 2-day banger. come check out woods, they’ll be banging out our songs.
see you there. moshing during woods encouraged.
love,
aerin

It’s no secret that I have been digging on Ben Cook’s Young Governer 7″, and I picked up Wooden Glove many months back when Academy noted that it was another one of his projects.  It was one of those that took a little while to sink in, but now I love it.   Here is what Jeremy Earl, of Woods, had to say about The Bitters’ track “Warrior” in Woods’ recent interview with Pitchfork:

On our last tour in Europe, this song by Toronto’s Bitters became our anthem. Sort of pumped me up.

Check out the album and the track:

Woods go on at the Woodsist/Captured Tracks Festival at 7:30pm on July 4th.   If you are there for their set be sure to keep an eye out for Aerin…I’m sure the songs she will preform will be wonderful.

monster head room (this week in mail order)

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

My obsession over the past month has been the new Ganglians‘ record Monster Head Room (if you follow my twitter or tumblr you probably were expecting this one), and I’m hoping after the pitchfork review of the album last week it is yours too.

Around the beginning of June I placed an order for the Weird Forest edition of this record (almost entirely based on the packaging, but I had been digging on a handful of the tracks for a while too).  It was on red vinyl and was an LP/7″ combo limited to 500 copies (thanks to MBV for the heads up).  The next morning I was clicking back on Weird Forest’s website only to find out that the first pressing was sold out!  This is responsible for the delay in posting…I tend to only do this column on vinyl, and wanted to wait till it was back in print.

I checked back on Weird Forest this today to find out that the second press, on black vinyl of the LP/7″ combo is now available…this one also limited to 500 copies.  The image to the right can be used to imagine what the second press will look like.

The good news is though that this record will not be going out of print again.  According to Weird Forest:

The second pressing (on black vinyl for you purists) is available. Many distros and shops will have it shortly. Please note this record will not be going out of print — after our second pressing Woodsist will be keeping the vinyl in print.

It is unclear if the Woodsist 3rd pressing will have the LP/7″ format, but either way this record is too good to be out of print.

If you haven’t heard Ganglians yet, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.  I really love the bands coming out of the Woodsist camp, but it is no secret that they all go very well together…not that Ganglians fall far from the tree, I just think that they are offering up a new sound (or their own take on an old sound) that feels very new and fresh.

Ganglians, in my mind, are another product of the summer and their record comes just in time.  Psychedelic stoner pop rounded off with a healthy dose of folk… and while this all sounds familiar you get an unexpected undertones, and sometimes overtones, of the late 60’s early 70’s pop thrown in.    This is indeed an outdoor record, and if not outdoors at least sunshine flooding into your windows.   This album has the ability to transport you into another place, time, and state of mind (it has been a good escape the past couple days in the office)…and all good vibes.

I’m looking forward to rocking it on mine and klk’s long drive though the South East in a couple weeks.

Here’s to summer:

[mp3] Ganglians- “Lost Words”
[mp3] Ganglians- “Valiant Brave”
(both tracks via MBV. off Monster Head Room)

[Stream] Monster Head Room in it’s entirety at aLonelyMic.com
(again via MBV)

Buy the LP/7″ combo from Weird Forest here
Buy the CD from Woodsist here.

If the LP goes out of print at Weird Forest keep and eye on Woodsist, it will be repressed.

You can jump tracks on the stream, and if you only listen to one…please listen to “Crying Smoke,” it seems to be the one I keep going back to over and over again.  This is definitely one of my favorite albums of the year so far.

Ganglians also have a handful of tour dates coming up, but these two seem to be the only ones confirmed:

  • 7/4/09 Brooklyn, NY @ 979 Broadway Backyard (WOODSIST/CAPTURED TRACKS FESTIVAL)
  • 7/5/09 Brooklyn, NY @ Monster Island Basement
  • more tour info here (most are still TBA, but the cities are there)
    • if you think you can help them with their east coast tour see this blog post and get in touch.

beach comber

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

I have been talking about Real Estate a lot over the past couple months.  They have had several really wonderful 7″s come out, a great tour EP, and are gearing up for (I think ) two 12″s this year.  One on Mexican Summer and one on Woodsist.

Underwater Peoples, who released Real Estate’s first 7″,  just put out a really great label sampler and I just haven’t been able to get one of the Real Estate tracks out of my head (this track also appeared on their Atlantic City Express Way Tour CD-R).  “Beach Comber” has been pretty much been on repeat, and I’m having a hard time not making everyone I know listen to it.    The Grateful Dead influence is coming through strong on this song, and I think it really shows this bands ability to jam.  This band is one that brings good vibes, and when I hear them, and specifically this song, I feel like the summer is going to be infinite.

[mp3] Real Estate- “Beach Comber”
(via Stereogum)  Buy the Real Estate’s 7″s from Woodsist and Underwater Peoples (click though to buy)

The Underwater Peoples Comp has a pretty stellar line up including tracks a couple Real Estate (including “Beach Comber”), Ducktails, Frat Dad, Julian Lynch, and more.   Buy the Underwater Peoples Comp here.  It’s a CD, but it’s only $4.50…that is the right price for a CD.

Real Estate are also playing North Side Festival this weekend!

Tomorrow, June 11th:

These Are Powers @ midnight
Javelin @ 11pm
Real Estate @ 10pm
Air Waves @ 9pm
Organs @ 8pm
Death by Audio
Doors at 7:30pm
$10

More Real Estate tour dates can be found here.

it came from new jersey (this week in mail order)

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

This time there are two new releases from the wondrous realm of New Jersey.  The first has had quite a bit of fan fair on the internet, and the other, as far as I can see, has been released silently…but people need to take notice!

First off comes by way of Brooklyn’s own Woodsist Records with the release of a new Real Estate 7″.  The boys in Real Estate have been turning heads since the release of the first 7″, and their live shows have been getting great reviews.  This 7″ is titled “Fake Blues,” and I assume that it is the song we have all heard floating around on the web…as well as a B Side or two titled “Poolswimmers.”

This 7″ might or might not be the domestic issue of the Real Estate 7″ that is being released on Half Machine Records in Europe?  Anyone with info on this please let me know. See the comments for the differences between the 7″s (thanks Martin).

If you aren’t familiar with Real Estate yet, you should be…their sweet sounds of Galexie 500 meets Pavement meets Grateful Dead psychedelic jams all with a  bit of country twang mixed in just might make them your new favorite band.  And don’t worry if these few 7″s aren’t enough Real Estate has a big year planned…with a 12″ EP coming out on Mexican Summer in June (500 Copies only.  Take note of this now.), and a full length due out on Woodsist as well.

Buy Real Estate’s Fake Blues 7″ from Woodsist Records here (PayPal info at the bottom of the page).

for more on Real Estate (including mp3s) click here.

Now for the this week’s quiet thunder….

Matt Mondanile, who also happens to be a member of Real Estate, has had his solo project Ducktails for quite a while now.  Ducktails has been ultra-prolific releasing many tapes, cd-r’s, and several 7″ singles…but as of this week Ducktails gets it’s first proper LP release on Not Not Fun (actually it appears that it was released yesterday)!

Ducktails psychedelic mostly (if not all) instrumental tropical jams are the perfect medicine for a rainy day (I listened to some this morning)…think a more atmospheric sensory overloaded version of High Places minus the vocals….While Ducktails might be over shadowed currently by Real Estate, Mondanile really brings Ducktails into it’s own, and I’m very excited to hear this new LP.

Not Not Fun describes it tantalizingly as:

Plastic palm trees. Beach scene snowglobes. Airbrushed neon sunset hotel paintings. All shining examples of potent Fake Escapism at work, in real life. And if you’ve ever wondered what the audio equivalent of this kind of cheap coastal utopian simulacrum is, take a good listen to the recorded works of Mr. Matt Mondanile aka Ducktails, a crazy talented suburban New Jersey post-teen who serves up masterpiece after blasterpiece of shimmering, smoke-and-mirrors exotic fantasia, rainbow psych-pop muzak for imaginary helicopter rides over crystal lagoons and lost waterfalls…  (this for description goes on… for more click here and scroll down).

As far as the small print about the release (also from Not Not Fun):

Black vinyl LPs mastered by Graham Lambkin (of The Shadow Ring) housed in matte jackets with cover artwork by Jan Anderzen (of Kemialliset Ystavat/Tomuttontu), plus a photocopied insert. Edition of 600.

With only 600 copies of this thing out there I’m ordering mine today.  Maybe you should too.  If your not into vinyl (I’m guess there are people who aren’t), you can buy the CD…limited to 500 copies (more limited than the LP!)…with a bonus song not on the LP.

Buy Ducktails’ s/t LP or CD from Not Not Fun Records here.

Listen to Ducktails:

GP News: For those of you that have been flowing the Great Pumpkin, and specifically the segment: This Week In Mail Order we are going to have a treat for you next week.  You might remember a while ago when I posted about Jail’s self released album…when I was making this post I emailed the band and asked for some mp3’s.  They didn’t get back to me until after I posted, but offered to send me an LP to give away off of the Great Pumpkin!  So sometime next week the Great Pumpkin will have it’s first Give Away!  Stay tuned…you just might win a copy of Jail’s  There’s No Sky (Oh My My)!
